Mechanical Systems Engineer
Reports To: Vice President, Product Development & Engineering
Purpose/Function: The Mechanical Systems Engineer (MSE) is responsible for systems integration and testing of all NanoPoint instruments under the direction of the Sr. Project Engineer. He/She will perform basic studies between the different functional components of the systems being developed and how they affect the overall system performance and product deadlines. The Mechanical Systems Engineer will become familiar with Nanopoint's microfluidics systems and learn the trade offs necessary to commercialize these types of products effectively and in a timely manner. The Mechanical Systems Engineer also aides in the process of taking products from conceptual design all the way through manufacturing to ensure a smooth transition is made between the various phases. He/She will work with a multi-disciplined team and participate in project planning to insure the company goals and scheduled milestones are met on time. The Mechanical Systems Engineer will develop drawings and assemblies as required by the Project Engineer.
The Systems Engineer works with the VP of Product Development & the Project Engineer to establish schedules and resource requirements for instrument systems and subsystem development. He/She will help to develop the system level design specifications for the mechanical systems, which will be contained in Nanopoint imaging systems. The MSE will also help in preparing the cost estimates and design products which meet cost targets agreed upon with the staff members. Other responsibilities include:
- Aide the design of opto-mechanical and electro-mechanical subsystems including custom and commercial off the shelf components.
- Complete design of sub-projects within established schedules and budgets.
- Participate in design reviews. Thoroughly assess the ability of proposed designs to meet specified requirements, including outsourced manufacturability.
- Interact closely with multi-discipline team members to aide in the development of comprehensive solutions to design problems.
- Develop test procedures and document protocols.
- Develop drawings necessary to commercialize products
- Generate engineering drawings and specifications to industry standards, including ASME Y14.5M-1994 Dimensioning and Tolerance.
- Participate in standardizing document control for the company.
- Work outside your field of expertise as required, to meet project milestones.

Requirements/Qualifications:
- Requires a Bachelor's degree in mechanical or electrical engineering with a minimum of 5 years in the industry (medical device experience preferred)
- Requires prior commercial product development experience
- A strong mechanical engineering background for making creative and innovative designs is desired
- Requires significant understanding of product development and quality process skills
- Requires strong interpersonal, communication and technical leadership skills
- Experience in startup companies a real plus
